Operating Principle: Act with Integrity

Posted by Gordon Spaugh, Regional Vice President on Aug 13, 2018 7:00:00 AM

Today’s operating principle is Act with IntegrityI found a great quote that describes what integrity looks like in action. “Integrity means following your moral or ethical convictions and doing the right thing in all circumstances, even if no one is watching you.”

I was blessed to grow up with parents who modeled integrity. I’ll never forget my Dad working with me to file a tax return when I was a teenager. I had earned money mowing lawns and we filed a tax return so I could pay any taxes I might owe, even though the government would never have known that I earned the money. My Dad also taught me to turn out the lights when leaving a hotel room out of respect for the person who invested money in the hotel. Just as my Dad taught me lessons that still guide my actions today, we have the opportunity as leaders to influence those around us to act with integrity

What does acting with integrity look like in the area of safety for utility vegetation management?  I encourage you to ask this question to the members of your team.  A few of my thoughts:

  • Be responsible; do what you say you will do as a safety leader
  • Report all incidents per Lewis and customer requirements
  • Always tell the truth during incident investigations

Have a great, safe day!
